The reserve is situated at a distance of about 25 km South of Varna and it is 40 km in length and reaches 5 km in width in some areas.
The Kamchia Reserve was established in 1951 to protect the remnants of floodplain forests which had once covered a considerably larger area. The biosphere reserve itself was established in 1977 with all other Biosphere Reserves in Bulgaria.
Total plants found in the reserve are 245 species. Kamchia river and azmatsi are inhabited by 39 fish species. Total on the reserve territory are found 14 species of amphibians and reptiles, and also 26 species of small mammals.
